CHAPTER 41

He woke up with a start when he heard the scream. At the same moment, something fell to the ground with a smash.

‘What the fuck...?’

Disorientated, he tried to make out where he was. The sun had gone down, plunging the room into total darkness. He sat up. Slowly, it came back to him: finding Nolt, breaking into his apartment, and tracking him down to this sleazy hotel near Schiphol.

He got up and walked to the small orange light on the wall, marking the spot where the key card was inserted. Broken glass crunched beneath his feet. He flicked on the light switch and shut his eyes as the room lit up.

He heard the scream again. Looking around the room for the glass from earlier, he realised that that was the reason for the crunching beneath his feet. He made for the bathroom, unwrapped another glass, and placed it against the wall again.

The voices seemed to be more distinct now. The Curaçao gang in the next room were either closer to the wall or simply raising their voices more.

A male voice was saying, ‘… still five fucking pellets missing.’

The girl’s voice followed this. ‘Just give me more time.’

Male voice again: ‘The others have excreted theirs. Is there something you’re trying to hide? To steal?’

Another cry of pain.

Another male voice shouted, ‘Stop screaming!’

‘I don’t feel well,’ the girl wept. ‘I want a doctor.’

‘That’s not going to happen. How do I know they didn’t emerge halfway across the Atlantic, and you kept them for yourself?’

‘You know what the Beekeeper does to people who try to steal from him?’

‘I’m not trying to steal. I swear to God.’

The Beekeeper? Connor wondered.

The girl continued to protest. ‘The customs would have found it.’

‘Not likely, with the only competent customs officer out of the picture.’

‘Take the others to Hoofddorp train station. They’re free to go.… She’s not going anywhere.’

‘You heard him. Let’s go, guys. You’re free to enjoy our beautiful country for the next couple of days.’

He could hear rummaging across the room; a mixture of zippers, clips fastened, and footsteps.

Connor walked to his own door and peered through the peephole as the three Curaçao guys assembled in the hallway. Nolt came out and led the way.

‘Let’s go.’

‘Henk!’

The blonde man appeared. Henk told the others to meet him down at the reception. He walked back to his friend. Connor could see Henk’s shoulder as the two spoke at the doorway.

‘What if she doesn’t deliver? Five pellets. Eight grams in each, that’s at least 5,000 euros.’

‘I know.’ Henk looked at his watch. ‘Give her another ten minutes. Otherwise, we get them ourselves.’

‘You mean with the dissection kit?’

Henk nodded. ‘What choice do we have?’

‘Shit. I hate cutting them up, especially the pretty ones. Where is the kit?’

‘In the car. Will I get it?’

‘Let’s not waste time. I’ll walk with you.’

‘What about the girl?’

Connor heard footsteps back into the room. Moments later, the blonde guy emerged. ‘She’s not going anywhere.’

They both set off down the hallway.

Connor remained deathly still next to the door.
